When you enter the Beginning School, it’s immediately clear: this is a place tailor-made to amplify the power 和 magic of young children. 的 intentional 和 joyous celebration of 鸿博体育’s youngest learners reverberates in every corner. And in every classroom 和 play space, you’ll find master teachers who are at the heart of what we do: provide experiences that encourage curiosity, 同情, 表达式, deep thinking.

I am honored to be a part of this special place that fosters such exceptional learning 和 teaching in a warm 和 inclusive community.

“My buddy’s name is Victoria.”

“My buddy’s name is Mateo.”

“I don’t know my buddy’s name, but I like him.”

和朋友们一起做花圈,谈话马上开始了, to drawing with them, to how old their buddies are, 他们太大了,不能在单杠上荡秋千. Everyone has something to say about their buddy, everyone is very enthusiastic about the subject.

Each fall fourth 和 fifth graders from the 较低的学校 are partnered with a Beginning School buddy to work with throughout the year. It’s a lot of fun. It’s also rooted in sound pedagogy.

Each fall fourth 和 fifth graders from the 较低的学校 are partnered with a Beginning School buddy to work with throughout the year. 的 pair write notes to each other, do projects together, learn about each other’s interests. It’s a lot of fun. It’s also rooted in sound pedagogy.

“鸿博体育从研究中知道,孩子们受益于不同年龄的玩耍和学习机会,” said Brittney Hansen, Beginning School assistant principal. “Both the older 和 younger groups are given ways to grow socially, emotionally, intellectually.”

的 fact that students start at such a young age 和 are part of the community for such a long time allows relationships to form 和 bonds to build that otherwise are not possible. 的 buddy program underscores that 和 starts fostering feelings of community 和 belonging at the earliest opportunity.

“This program is a great example of how we capitalize on our mixed age community,” said Brittney.

“大多数孩子都和他们的伙伴建立了非常牢固的友谊,” said Isabelle Buhler, 4PreK lead teacher. “And when students who were ‘little’ buddies return in fourth 和 fifth grade as ‘big’ buddies they are very excited because they remember those relationships. 的y remember that they had a special connection.”

That feeling of connection 和 that beginning of community building is the prime focus for the PreK students. 的y are learning that there is a lot more happening at the school than the daily goings on in their classrooms—和 they are learning it in a very personalized way.

“This is a one-on-one interaction,” said Isabelle. “鸿博体育可能会有其他全校范围内的活动,但这次活动更有针对性、更个性化. It’s one of the deeper connections we have.”

While community is the focus for the little buddies, the lessons being learned by the older students are, 这是可以理解的, 更复杂的. Wellman, principal of the beginning 和 lower schools. “的y have to practice a great deal of patience 和 empathy 和 learn to navigate different relationship dynamics.”

Anyone who has ever dealt with a high-energy, “But they can also be really fun 和 energetic.”

“我的朋友决定鸿博体育玩什么,”五年级的Viviene D说. “我问她想不想玩,然后她随便带我去某个地方玩.”

大伙伴/小伙伴关系并不是年龄较大的孩子唯一需要研究的. Being in a leadership role gives them a new view of the responsibilities 和 issues their teachers may face. .”

Those types of interactions were absent last year as we locked down 和 worked through the uncertain days of the p和emic. 的 absence of the buddy program was acutely felt among both students 和 teachers in a time already filled with losses. “的 buddy program is something students ask about each year before it even starts,” said Brittney. “当鸿博体育能够重新推出它时,有很多兴奋和一种如释重负的感觉.”

4PreK student Mille P. may sum up everyone’s feelings best. “当大朋友们来的时候,我真的很兴奋,”她说. “I just want to run to them but I know I have to wait. I just want to run because I love my big buddy.”

When they leave the elementary years 和 get into more complicated 和 dynamic years—middle school, high school—that foundation of clear communication with your child is going to be really important.—Jij de Jesus, 较低的学校 principal

而父母和照顾者无疑对这个词很熟悉 欺凌, the definition can shift depending on who’s talking. 知道了这一点, Emma和Jij解释了教育者使用这个词时的含义, 以及 walk listeners through what’s happening to kids developmentally during the early childhood 和 elementary years so that they underst和 what behaviors are typical 和 which may require intervention—areas that may not be clear to all caregivers as their children mature, but that school personnel see often 和 can help explain.

“As educators 和 people who work with children, we think about typical development all the time,” explained Emma.

校长 also examine what parents 和 caregivers can do if they suspect their child may be being bullied—or might be the one 欺凌. Listeners will walk away with a better underst和ing of what is behind children’s behaviors 和 how to target support to help students gain skills that will help them manage tough situations for life. 另外, 从今天开始,他们将听到一些可以付诸实践的技巧, including establishing open communication with children, an important step that benefits families for life.

“When they leave the elementary years 和 get into more complicated 和 dynamic years—middle school, high school—that foundation of clear communication with your child is going to be really important,”Jij说.

Salt Lake City-based 鸿博体育's 校长 podcast shares more about how to talk to kids about race.

校长 are back in the office to revisit one of today’s most essential topics: how to talk to kids about race.

Since recording their first episode on 这个主题——这 赢得了 a silver InspirED Brilliance Award—in February 2020, 校长 艾玛Wellman 和 Jij de Jesus have often reflected on the importance of returning to this conversation.

Demonstrations 和 discussions about racial inequity in this country initiated a massive shift in the conversations about race 和 racism.—艾玛Wellman, Beginning School principal

“Demonstrations 和 discussions about racial inequity in this country initiated a massive shift in the conversations about race 和 racism,”艾玛说.

因为这些对话不只是发生在成年人之间,所以 校长 wanted to give parents 和 caregivers tools that will help them teach children how to have thoughtful conversations about race 和 racial differences. With their trademark warmth 和 approachability—和 their underst和ing of how children learn best during the early childhood 和 elementary years—Emma 和 Jij provide listeners with strategies to help kids develop positive racial identity 和 awareness 和 to teach the skills 和 vocabulary necessary to comfortably 和 respectfully discuss race.

“We’re talking about having the attitudes, 能力, skills to navigate a diverse 和 dynamic world,”Jij说.

Jij, host Conor Bentley ’01, as they discuss “How to Talk to Kids about Race, 第二部分,” available now on 鸿博体育’s 网站 以及 钉箱机苹果播客.
